Driving through a dark wintry Cumbrian landscape last week, I switched on the radio for a little festive cheer. There was a documentary on about how they do Christmas in Iceland. It is called Jól. Central to the mythology is Grýla, a giant cannibal. Her job is to make stew from the bad children in the area and eat it at Christmas (a smidge more severe than coal in your stocking, eh?). Iceland, it would seem is a bit more “Bleak mid-winter” and a little less “Jingle Bells” with its Christmas stories.

Years ago, some work friends had come back to my parents’ house prior to us going out. I was 22. We were chatting in the kitchen when the front door burst open with shouts of “Hello, hello, are you in?"

I’m in the US again. This morning, I turned on the TV and caught a news report that featured a bunch of alarmingly imbalanced Pennsylvanians waving a fat rodent about. Today is Groundhog Day. The tradition is that when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on the 2nd of February, if it can see its shadow it will be wintry weather for another six weeks. If it is a dull day and there is no shadow, spring will come quickly. As I watched the news, I thought, I bet that beefy rat could give someone a decent nip and surprised myself by watching it to the end in the hope that someone would get munched.

I attended my first NBA Basketball game on Wednesday night. Oklahoma City Thunder played the Golden State Warriors in a semi-final match at the San Francisco Coliseum. Greg and Katie, the friends who invited me, were buzzed with excitement particularly about one player, Stephen Curry.

“Joy” is the new Jennifer Lawrence movie about a woman who is a natural entrepreneur. Eventually, she is successful in business but not without a few scrapes, some betrayal and serious money concerns. It is a gripping and brilliantly acted movie.

American Airlines has internet, which tempted me into hours of mid-flight texting to my friends back home because I could.

I am flying back over the Atlantic again, returning home from the US after a little winter sun. It feels very different to my last “flight blog” where everyone was sleeping. This time, people are watching movies, chatting and using their laptops. I wonder why that is?
