A Darker Christmas

24 December 2017

Driving through a dark wintry Cumbrian landscape last week, I switched on the radio for a little festive cheer. There was a documentary on about how they do Christmas in Iceland. It is called Jól. Central to the mythology is Grýla, a giant cannibal. Her job is to make stew from the bad children in the area and eat it at Christmas (a smidge more severe than coal in your stocking, eh?). An Unrehearsed Life

24 February 2015

I am flying back over the Atlantic again, returning home from the US after a little winter sun. It feels very different to my last “flight blog” where everyone was sleeping. This time, people are watching movies, chatting and using their laptops. I wonder why that is?
